SINGAPORE AIRLINES
Can there be “a class beyond first class,” as Singapore Airlines claims to offer? According to Raymond Kollau of Airlinetrends.com, “Singapore Airlines is raising the bar with its new A380s, which feature 12 suites that are like cabins on an ocean liner.” Suites have sliding doors, armchair-like seats, a 23-inch wall-mounted LCD screen and a stationary drawer with writing supplies. Each suite also has its own full-sized flat bed with pillows and fine linen by Givenchy. And, in a first for commercial aviation, for couples traveling together, the sleeping areas in the middle seats can be converted to double beds.

Want a seat? SIN A380s fly from Los Angeles to Tokyo and in January will add a route between New York (JFK) and Frankfurt. Both flights continue to Singapore. Fares for a round-trip suite from LAX to SIN begin at around $12,000.

EMIRATES SUITESFirst-class seats on Emirates’ A380 and some 777 airplanes are private suites with sliding doors, personal minibars and seats that transform into flat beds. First-class fliers on A380 long-haul flights also have access to the onboard ShowerSpa and a complimentary five-minute shower. Individual suites are also part of Etihad Airways' Diamond First Class service on the airline’s A340-600s and A330s and include a flat bed, sliding doors, personal minibar and 23-inch LCD screen. “The leather seat and furnishings are upholstered by Poltrona Frau, which also provides interiors for Ferrari cars,” Kollau says.

Want a seat? A first-class round-trip ticket between New York and Dubai on Emirates in February will cost about $13,000. Diamond First Class from New York to Abu Dhabi begins at about $14,600.

Whether your flight is short or long — but especially if it’s long — where you sit on the airplane can make all the difference in how much you enjoy the trip. That’s why sites such as SeatGuru and Seatexpert, which evaluate the desirability of every seat on just about every type of commerical aircraft, are so popular, and why so many airlines keep raising the bar — and the price — for the most comfortable seats. Here’s a look at what your money might buy in the sky, starting with the best seats.
